I understand that Tri-City is the third-ranked team in the CHL. I understand that they are very talented at all positions on the ice and can play with any team in the CHL. But last night, they didn’t win the game as much as the Spokane Chiefs lost it.
Spokane, the second-ranked team in the CHL and first in the WHL, did not, in any way, show up to play hockey last night. The number of players who showed up ready to play for the Chiefs last night could be counted on one hand, which would be enough to beat a team like the Portland Winter Hawks, but not the Americans. Save for Tyler Johnson and the Judd Blackwater-David Rutherford-Ondrej Roman line, nobody wearing a Spokane sweater showed that they wanted to win last night.
Defense was a major problem last night and the problems started immediately. Spokane’s top-returning defenseman, Justin Falk, turned the puck over in his own zone on the power play and then failed to obstruct Tri-City’s best player, Colton Yellow Horn from taking a free shot on net at Kevin Armstrong, which luckily hit the post and bounced into the net. Fellow defensemen Mike Reddington and Jared Cowen played particularly poorly, while the other three (Jace Coyle, Brett Bartman and Jared Spurgeon) played mediocre hockey.
Spokane’s top line of Drayson Bowman, Chris Bruton and Mitch Wahl was abysmal, showing no signs of life during the contest, especially on the power play, repeatedly failing to take shots, both on the 5-on-4 and 5-on-3 power plays. Bowman, who tore the league apart in the month of November, was especially bad, trying to be too cute with the puck rather than putting shots on net. The rest of the team was unimpressive at best, allowing Tri-City to pull within 4 points in the U.S. Division with their 4-1 victory last night.
